The White Grill Fence, was one of the first compositions I made in color after years of black and white picture making. I had just relocated to the North Adriatic in what is called the Kvarner region, where the small yacht community of Icici is and I guess I had never seen color before.
My intentions were first those of a black and white photographer seeing the boldest contrast between the white grill of the fence and the dark of the sky. When I edited the picture for the first time, I intended to revert it to grayscale (I had to use color film which was all I could afford). I saw then what was here to influence me. The composition is even slightly out of focus.. which had a hand in later guiding me toward a new style of expression in subsequent photography work.
The White Grill Fence is to me one of my most important works and remains one of my favorites despite some clumsiness it took a long time to get around.
The fact that the original negative was lost and the work exists only on a disk which managed to survive having been miraculously overlooked is the topping on this cake.
Two years passed since White Grill Fence was made and just recently I managed to make a series of works revisiting my old inspiration. One remarkable photograph worth seeing is located in the Blue Series which shows an arrangement of the fence with the serendipitous occurrence of a photographer having stolen into the middle of my scene, camera proudly (perhaps tutorially.?) aimed elsewhere.
